One of Japan’s biggest rock bands is making a comeback with its eighth album: The band coldrain will release “OPTIMIZE = OPTDEMISE” in September. Although the name may still be new to some on the global stage, the band—founded in 2007—can look back on seven studio albums and an extensive history of international touring. Through tours with acts like ONE OK ROCK, Papa Roach, The Used, Bullet for My Valentine, and Electric Callboy, coldrain have long since established their place on the global stages of the alternative metal scene. With sold-out arena shows in their home country of Japan and their strong musicality, the band continues to prove itself as one of the most underrated names in the international alternative metal scene.

Now the quintet returns with “OPTIMIZE = OPTDEMISE,” released via Century Media Records. As singer Masato explains, the album poses a central question: Will humanity continue to evolve by using technological progress as a tool, or will it strive for optimization to the point where it loses its humanity and ultimately brings about its own demise? The album follows up on the digital EP “OPTIMIZE,” which was released on October 25, 2025.

Mastered by Mike Kalajian (Cigarettes After Sex, Neck Deep, Silverstein), “OPTIMIZE = OPTDEMISE” brings together, across 12 tracks, a sophisticated balance of hard, aggressive vocals, stadium-ready melodies, and the high-energy intensity for which Japanese rock bands are known.
Standout songs like “EX HUMANITY” and “INCOMPLETE” continue to resonate long after the album ends, leaving a lasting impression. The track “POISON” shines thanks to a feature by Bert McCracken of The Used—a very special collaboration that’s sure to evoke feelings of nostalgia among fans of the alternative scene.
